The RRS pursuit column allows engine-modified vehicles to be VSB14 compliant. The legislative changes mean if you change the motor in a car with a non-collapsible column, you need to change it. Some exemptions are possible on limited registrations. The pursuit column is the only column to have passed the Australian and New Zealand standard.

A collapsible steering column is a mechanism that is used to transfer energy from the steering wheel into the steering gearbox, which transfers energy to turn the wheels of a vehicle. Though the designs for steering columns have varied since their inception, a typical collapsible steering column looks like two interlocking shafts that attach directly to the steering wheel and the steering gearbox. The steering column is the shaft directly under the steering wheel in which the ignition and automatic shift levers are often located.
The collapsible design introduced an ‘inner’ and ‘outer’ sleeve to the shaft, with a number of steel bearings pressed in between each sleeve. A strong ‘safety resin’ is used to bond the bearings to the sleeves. Once a specific level of pressure is exceeded, the special resin shatters, allowing the sleeves to compress telescopically.
